Many parents have been successful using a bedwetting alarm to cure their child's primary nocturnal enuresis. Although bedwetting alarms come in a variety of different makes, models and colors, they are all designed to do the same thing - that is alert the wearer as soon as urination starts. There are three basic types on the market - the wearable bedwetting alarm, wireless bedwetting alarm and bed pad and alarm.

1. Wearable Bedwetting Alarm

One of the most popular types of bedwetting alarms for children are the wearable alarms. A small compact alarm unit is worn attached to the child's pajama top, near the shoulder. A cord runs from the alarm unit to the sensor which is attached to the child's underpants. The wearable alarm is thought to be the most effective type of bedwetting alarm because the unit is so close to the ear. This means the wearer is instantly alerted when urination commences. The brain is gradually conditioned into knowing when the bladder is full and this is an important part of the learning process.

2. Wireless Bedwetting Alarm

Wireless bedwetting alarms have a transmitter which sends a wireless signal to the receiver (alarm) when moisture is detected. The receiver may be placed next to the bed or even across the room so the child has to get up to turn it off. This prevents them from simply turning it off and going back to sleep. Some wireless models come with special underwear, embedded with wires which detect moisture. Some brands have a clip on sensor and so the user can wear their own underwear. Teenagers and older children like wireless bedwetting alarms as some do not want wires across their body or to have to wear a tee shirt to bed. They work well for children who do not wet the bed every night but who have intermittent wetting.

3. Bed Pad and Alarm

This type of bedwetting alarm has a pad or mat which has sensor strips embedded within it to detect moisture. The pad is placed directly under the child and as soon as moisture is detected, the alarm is sounded and both the child and parent are alerted. The bed pad has a cord which is connected to the alarm unit. The alarm unit is generally attached to the side of the bed. To trigger the alarm, a child will often need to be very wet. When a child is unable to use a wearable bedwetting alarm, a bed pad and alarm may be more suitable.

Today bedwetting alarms are manufactured in a variety of colors which appeal to children. Some have a single tone whilst others offer a choice of more than one sound plus the option to add vibration. Others allow parents to record their own message or music. In some instances, a recording of a parent's voice has been more effective at waking their child than a random sound.

Many school age children suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis and it is always a good idea to speak with your physician if you are concerned about your child's bedwetting.
